Uttarpara is a semi-urban assembly constituency in Hooghly district, located along the western bank of the Hooghly river north of Kolkata. The area has a mix of historical urban character, residential neighbourhoods and small-scale industry. Uttarpara is part of the industrially developed Hooghly riverside belt and has been a Trinamool Congress constituency in recent elections.
In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, the seat was won by Kanchak Mallick of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC). He secured victory over the nearest rival from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by a margin of 35,989 votes. The result reflected the broader political alignment in the constituency and underlined the dominant party's organisational strength in the area.
Urban infrastructure, including road quality, drainage and public transport, is a central concern in Uttarpara. Industrial employment and the revitalisation of traditional local industries such as jute and printing are ongoing issues. Access to quality healthcare, education and civic amenities is consistently demanded. With a relatively educated and urban electorate, governance, law and order and welfare delivery are prominent political themes. The 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections are shaping up as a high-stakes contest between the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is seeking to make major inroads into the state. With anti-incumbency, law-and-order concerns and welfare delivery all playing a role, every constituency is expected to be closely watched. Trinamool Congress has fielded Sirsanya Bandopadhyay while BJP has fielded Dipanjan Chakraborty for the 2026 election.
