Jorasanko Assembly constituency is a Legislative Assembly seat in Kolkata district, West Bengal. It is part of No. 24 Kolkata Uttar Lok Sabha constituency and is one of the 294 assembly constituencies in the state. Established in 1951, Jorasanko is a general category, fully urban constituency situated in Kolkata Corporation district under Kolkata North. Jorasanko Assembly Constituency No. 165 has around 1,97,367 electors and approximately 250 polling booths across 64 polling stations. It is one of the seven assembly segments under the Kolkata Uttar parliamentary seat. In the 2021 Vidhan Sabha elections, Vivek Gupta of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) won the seat with 52,123 votes, defeating Meena Devi Purohit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by a margin of 12,743 votes. In the 2016 assembly elections, Smita Bakshi of the AITC won with 44,766 votes, defeating Rahul (Biswajit) Sinha of the BJP by 6,290 votes. Vivek Gupta is an industrialist, media leader and politician. Before becoming MLA from Jorasanko in 2021, he served as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament from 2012 to 2018 representing the Trinamool Congress. He is the Managing Director and Chief Group Editor of Sanmarg, a leading Hindi daily in Eastern India, and has played a prominent role in representing the Hindi-speaking business community in the state. He has been associated with several parliamentary committees, including those related to food, consumer affairs, public distribution and industry, and has also been a member of national bodies such as the IISER Council and the National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction. Jorasanko has also figured in the broader political debate over the role of central agencies during elections. In 2024, Vivek Gupta was part of a Trinamool Congress delegation that staged a protest outside the Election Commission of India in New Delhi, alleging misuse of central agencies such as the ED, CBI, NIA and Income Tax Department against opposition leaders during the Lok Sabha elections.
