Sitalkuchi (SC) is a Scheduled Caste–reserved assembly constituency located in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal. Positioned in the northern part of the state near the India–Bangladesh border, the constituency has a predominantly rural character. Agriculture, small-scale trade, and border-linked economic activity influence the local economy. In recent years, Sitalkuchi has drawn statewide attention due to both its electoral importance and sensitive law-and-order developments, making it a closely watched seat.
In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, the constituency was won by Baren Chandra Barman of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He defeated his nearest rival from the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) by a margin of 16,394 votes. The outcome reflected a consolidation of support for the BJP in parts of north Bengal during that election, although the margin also indicated the presence of a competitive political environment.
Key issues in Sitalkuchi (SC) are shaped by its rural and borderland context. Agricultural concerns remain central, with farmers frequently raising demands related to irrigation facilities, crop prices, and protection from flood damage. Infrastructure gaps — including rural roads, drainage, and access to reliable electricity — continue to be highlighted by residents.
