Jangipur is one of the 294 Assembly constituencies in West Bengal, located in Murshidabad district and forming part of the Jangipur Lok Sabha seat. It is a general category constituency and one of seven segments within the parliamentary area.
In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election, TMC’s Jakir Hossain retained the seat with a decisive victory, securing 106,444 votes, or 53.65% of the total. BJP candidate Sujit Das finished second with 43,964 votes (22.17%), followed by RSP’s Jane Alam Mian with 39,067 votes (19.69%). Hossain’s winning margin stood at 62,480 votes, reflecting a strong swing in favour of TMC. The voter turnout was recorded at 77.78%.
In 2016, Jakir Hossain had first won the seat for TMC with 66,869 votes (37.23%), defeating CPM’s Somnath Singha Ray. Earlier, in 2011, the constituency was won by Congress candidate Md Sohrab, who secured 46.76% of the vote.
The upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal will be conducted in two phases on April 23 and 29, with counting scheduled for May 4.
