Bhabanipur Assembly constituency is a Legislative Assembly seat in Kolkata district, West Bengal, and is part of No. 23 Kolkata Dakshin Lok Sabha constituency. It is one of the 294 assembly constituencies of the state. It is a general category assembly seat established in 1951 and one of the seven assembly segments under the Kolkata Dakshin parliamentary constituency. The constituency is located in Kolkata Corporation district and has traditionally been a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee represents Bhabanipur. She had moved out of her traditional seat to contest from Nandigram in the 2021 assembly elections, where she lost to her former aide and leader of opposition in West Bengal Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP, by over 1900 votes. To retain her position as chief minister, veteran TMC leader Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, who had won Bhabanipur in the 2021 general election, resigned from the seat, allowing Banerjee to contest the bypoll. Chattopadhyay had defeated BJP's actor-politician Rudranil Ghosh by around 28,000 votes from Bhabanipur. He currently holds the profile of Minstry of Agriculture for State. In the Bhabanipur by-election held on September 30, 2021, Mamata Banerjee won with a record margin of 58,835 votes, securing her return as chief minister for a third consecutive term. In 2016 Vidhan Sabha elections, Mamata won Bhabanipur with 65,520 votes, defeating Deepa Dasmunshi of the Indian National Congress, who received 40,219 votes.
