Hura (GEN), Assembly Constituency No. 247 per ECI delimitation, lies in Bankura district's southern fringe in South Bengal, bordering Puruliya district. The constituency encompasses Hura community development block and adjacent areas, characterized by laterite plateaux, scrubland, and rainfed agriculture. With approximately 248,000 electors, the population includes a mix of OBC Kurmi-Mahato communities, SC groups, and minority tribal populations predominantly engaged in rainfed paddy cultivation, forest-edge agriculture, and seasonal labour. Key voter concerns include drought and water scarcity (a laterite upland zone), irrigation infrastructure under the Mukutmanipur dam network, rural employment, electricity supply in remote hamlets, poor road connectivity, and healthcare access. Historically a Left Front-leaning constituency, Hura shifted toward BJP in the 2019–21 period reflecting the Jangalmahal-fringe rightward movement across southern Bankura. In the 2021 elections, BJP's Susanta Bauri defeated TMC's candidate with a moderate margin, reflecting the BJP surge in Bankura's southern rural belt in a high-turnout polarized contest. A marginal-to-leaning BJP seat; any TMC welfare-scheme consolidation or split in BJP's OBC voter base could make Hura competitive in 2026. It falls under Bishnupur Lok Sabha and is significant for BJP's hold on the laterite southern belt of Bankura.
