West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee reached the counting centre for the high-stakes Bhabanipur assembly seat on Monday afternoon after her party alleged that a Trinamool Congress agent had been forced out.
Banerjee arrived at Sakhawat Memorial Government Girls’ High School on Lord Sinha Road, the designated counting venue, as her lead over Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari narrowed over successive rounds.
Adhikari was already present at the centre. Trinamool Congress leaders claimed their counting agent had been removed, prompting the chief minister’s intervention.
The Bhabanipur contest has emerged as one of the most closely watched battles in the state, with both leaders locked in a prestige fight marked by sharp swings through the day.
Counting of votes for 293 assembly constituencies began at 8 am, with the Bharatiya Janata Party establishing an early lead.
Sukumar Ray leads in Cooch Behar Uttar with 17,906 votes (margin 2,423; 3/23), while Rathindra Bose is ahead in Cooch Behar Dakshin with 22,616 votes (margin 4,253; 4/20), strengthening BJP’s hold in the district.
Ratna Debnath of the Bharatiya Janata Party, referred to as the mother of the RG Kar victim, is leading in Panihati (111) with 13,784 votes, ahead of Tirthankar Ghosh of the All India Trinamool Congress, who has secured 8,717 votes, trailing by 5,067 after 2 of 13 rounds.
Kalatan Dasgupta has 3,237 votes, while Subhashish Bhattacharya, Sadhana Chakraborty and Sanjib Kumar Ghosh have 153, 72 and 39 votes respectively.
Mamata Banerjee of the All India Trinamool Congress is leading in Bhabanipur (159) with 17,244 votes, ahead of Suvendu Adhikari of the Bharatiya Janata Party, who has secured 8,762 votes, trailing by 8,482 after 4 of 20 rounds.
