Baghmundi is a forested, hilly constituency in Purulia district, home to a significant Adivasi and tribal population. The constituency is part of the Ayodhya Hills range — one of West Bengal's most scenic and ecologically rich zones — and livelihoods here are closely tied to forest produce, agriculture and tourism. TMC held the seat in 2021.
In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, the seat was won by Sushanta Mahato of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC). He secured victory over the nearest rival from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The result reflected the broader political alignment in the constituency and underlined the dominant party's organisational strength in the area.
Forest rights, tribal welfare and preservation of Adivasi cultural identity are central concerns in Baghmundi. Tourism development around the Ayodhya Hills has brought both opportunity and concerns around environmental impact. Agricultural support in a predominantly rain-fed area, MGNREGA employment and connectivity to remote habitations are persistent demands. Healthcare, education and welfare scheme delivery are also important issues. The 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections are shaping up as a high-stakes contest between the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is seeking to make major inroads into the state. With anti-incumbency, law-and-order concerns and welfare delivery all playing a role, every constituency is expected to be closely watched. Trinamool Congress has fielded Sushanta Mahato while BJP has fielded Rahidas Mahato for the 2026 election.
