Maheshtala is an urban-industrial assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas district, located along the western bank of the Hooghly river in the southern outskirts of Kolkata. The constituency has a dense working-class population engaged in industry, trade and services, with the Budge Budge–Maheshtala belt forming a significant industrial corridor. TMC's dominance here has been consistent and emphatic.
In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, the seat was won by Dulal Chandra Das of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC). He secured victory over the nearest rival from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by a margin of 57,949 votes. The result reflected the broader political alignment in the constituency and underlined the dominant party's organisational strength in the area.
Industrial employment and the welfare of factory workers are central issues in Maheshtala. The constituency's dense urban character means civic infrastructure — roads, drainage, potable water and public transport — is a persistent demand. Environmental concerns, particularly air and water quality near industrial units, are raised by residents. Access to healthcare, affordable housing and education for working-class families are also important. Law and order and the delivery of welfare entitlements are key political themes. The 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections are shaping up as a high-stakes contest between the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), led by chief minister Mamata Banerjee, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is seeking to make major inroads into the state. With anti-incumbency, law-and-order concerns and welfare delivery all playing a role, every constituency is expected to be closely watched. Trinamool Congress has fielded Subhasis Das while BJP has fielded Tamanath Bhowmik for the 2026 election.
