Panskura Paschim in Purba Medinipur district is currently represented by Phiroja Bibi of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. She won the 2021 election with 111,705 votes (48per cent vote share), defeating BJP’s Shintu Senapati’s 102,816 votes (44per cent), by a margin of 8,889 votes. Key issues include irrigation and flood control for paddy, betel leaf and vegetable farming across Panskura Paschim CDB, road upgrades linking rural GPs to Panskura town and Kolaghat markets, and drinking water access. Demand for expanded government health centres, schools and local employment opportunities in this mixed rural‑town belt are prominent local concerns flagged in district assessments. Phiroja Bibi has held the seat for TMC since 2016 (won 2011 as Omar Ali), overturning decades of CPI(M) dominance (Chittaranjan Dasthakur won 2006). Panskura Paschim falls under the Ghatal Lok Sabha constituency, where TMC MP Deepak Adhikari (Dev) won 2024 by 182,868 votes, aligning Assembly and parliamentary representation. The constituency’s history of Left strength transitioning to TMC, coupled with BJP’s recent challenge, makes it a bellwether for rural Medinipur’s political shifts.
