Chowrangee Assembly constituency is a Legislative Assembly seat in Kolkata district, West Bengal. Located in the heart of Kolkata, the state capital, it has significant political importance. The constituency is part of No. 24 Kolkata Uttar Lok Sabha constituency and is one of the 294 assembly constituencies in West Bengal. It is a general category seat situated in Kolkata Corporation district and one of the seven assembly segments under the Kolkata Uttar parliamentary constituency in Kolkata North district. Historically, Chowrangee was a stronghold of the Indian National Congress, and two former chief ministers of West Bengal, Bidhan Chandra Roy and Siddhartha Shankar Ray, were elected to the Assembly from this belt. In recent decades, it has emerged as a bastion of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) since the party’s formation. In the 2021 Vidhan Sabha elections, Nayana Bandyopadhyay of the AITC won the seat with 70,101 votes, defeating Devdutta Maji of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by a margin of 45,344 votes. In 2016, Nayana Bandyopadhyay of the AITC secured 55,119 votes, defeating Somendranath Mitra of the Indian National Congress (INC) by 13,216 votes. Nayana Bandyopadhyay is an actress-turned-politician known for her work in Bengali cinema and television. She has represented Chowrangee since 2014 as a Trinamool Congress MLA and earlier served as MLA from Bowbazar Assembly constituency from 2001 to 2006. The constituency has recently come into focus due to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls by the Election Commission. According to draft data, Chowringhee is set to witness one of the highest voter deletions in the state, with around 35.4per cent of its approximately 2.1 lakh electorate proposed to be removed from the rolls. Of the 74,553 voters marked for deletion, 35,042 were listed as untraceable and 25,053 as shifted.
