Chunchura (also Chinsurah) is the district headquarters constituency of Hooghly, a historically significant town with Dutch colonial heritage along the Hooghly river. The constituency is urban and semi-urban in character, with a diverse electorate of government employees, traders, industrial workers and students. It has been a Trinamool Congress stronghold in recent assembly elections.
In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, the seat was won by Asit Mazumder of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC). He secured victory over the nearest rival from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The result reflected the broader political alignment in the constituency and underlined the dominant party's organisational strength in the area.
As the district headquarters, Chunchura residents expect efficient administration and civic services — roads, healthcare and education are key demands. Industrial employment and the revitalisation of the local economy feature prominently in voter concerns. Preservation of the town's historical Dutch heritage and improvement of civic infrastructure are issues raised by resident groups. Law and order, welfare scheme implementation and political stability are important themes heading into the 2026 election. The 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections are shaping up as a high-stakes contest between the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is seeking to make major inroads into the state. With anti-incumbency, law-and-order concerns and welfare delivery all playing a role, every constituency is expected to be closely watched. Trinamool Congress has fielded Debangshu Bhattacharya while BJP has fielded Locket Chatterjee for the 2026 election.
