Jadavpur Assembly constituency is a Legislative Assembly constituency in the Indian state of West Bengal, mostly located in Kolkata district, with a small part in South 24 Parganas district under the Kolkata Municipal Corporation area. The constituency, historically considered a stronghold of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), is one of the most prestigious seats in the state, having been represented by former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. It is a general category assembly seat and one of the 294 assembly constituencies in West Bengal. Jadavpur is also one of the seven assembly segments of the Jadavpur Lok Sabha constituency, of which five segments are in South 24 Parganas and two in Kolkata district. In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, Debabrata Majumdar of AITC won with 98,100 votes, defeating CPI(M)’s Dr. Sujan Chakraborty by a margin of 38,869 votes. In 2016, Sujan Chakraborty of CPM secured victory with 98,977 votes, beating AITC’s Manish Gupta by 14,942 votes. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Mimi Chakraborty of AITC won Jadavpur with 688,472 votes, defeating BJP’s Anupam Hazra by 295,239 votes. In 2014, Sugata Bose of AITC secured the seat with 584,244 votes, surpassing CPI(M)’s Sujan Chakraborty by 125,203 votes. The 2024 Lok Sabha elections saw Sayani Ghosh of TMC win with 717,899 votes, defeating BJP’s Anirban Ganguly, who received 459,698 votes. Jadavpur, a key neighbourhood of South Kolkata, is home to Jadavpur University and several national and international research institutes. The area was named after Jadav Narayan Sarkar, a zamindar of Sonarpur.
