Chakulia is an assembly constituency located in Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal. The constituency is predominantly rural, with agriculture forming the backbone of the local economy. Paddy cultivation, jute farming, small businesses, and daily wage labour dominate livelihoods. Chakulia town acts as a local commercial hub for surrounding villages, giving the constituency both economic and political significance.
In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, Chakulia was won by Usman Ghani of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC). He defeated his nearest rival from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by a margin of approximately 7,000 votes. The result reflected a competitive political environment, with voter support fairly divided between the two leading parties.
Key issues in Chakulia revolve around rural development, agriculture, and infrastructure. Farmers frequently raise concerns regarding irrigation, crop pricing, and flood management. Residents also emphasise the need for better road connectivity, reliable electricity, and access to clean drinking water.
