Joypur is a rural constituency in Purulia district, situated in the southern part of one of West Bengal's most economically challenged districts. The constituency has a predominantly tribal and agrarian population, with MGNREGA, forest produce and small-scale agriculture forming the mainstay of livelihoods. It was a closely watched seat in 2021 given the BJP's broader surge in Purulia.
In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, the seat was won by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He secured victory over the nearest rival from the IND (TMC-backed). The result reflected the broader political alignment in the constituency and underlined the dominant party's organisational strength in the area.
Tribal land rights, welfare entitlements for Adivasi communities and MGNREGA employment are the foremost concerns in Joypur. Agricultural support, drought mitigation and access to clean water are persistent demands in this underdeveloped belt. Healthcare, education and road connectivity to remote villages are important voter priorities. Mining impact, forest conservation and tribal identity politics are also local issues. The 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections are shaping up as a high-stakes contest between the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is seeking to make major inroads into the state. With anti-incumbency, law-and-order concerns and welfare delivery all playing a role, every constituency is expected to be closely watched. Trinamool Congress has fielded Arjun Mahato for the 2026 election.
