Daspur is an assembly constituency in Paschim Medinipur district, located in the eastern part of the district bordering Hooghly. The constituency has a mixed rural and semi-urban character, with an economy built around agriculture, handloom weaving and small trade. Daspur is part of West Medinipur's handloom belt and has been held by the Trinamool Congress.
In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, the seat was won by Mamata Bhunia of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC). She secured victory over the nearest rival from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The result reflected the broader political alignment in the constituency and underlined the dominant party's organisational strength in the area.
The handloom weaving sector and artisan welfare are key concerns in Daspur, which has a significant weaver population producing distinctive local textiles. Agricultural support, rural infrastructure and flood management are also important. Employment, particularly for weavers and youth outside the sector, and access to healthcare and education are persistent voter demands. Welfare scheme delivery and local governance are also key issues. The 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections are shaping up as a high-stakes contest between the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is seeking to make major inroads into the state. With anti-incumbency, law-and-order concerns and welfare delivery all playing a role, every constituency is expected to be closely watched. Trinamool Congress has fielded Asis Hudait while BJP has fielded Tapan Dutta for the 2026 election.
