Gaighata, a block-level town in the Bangaon subdivision of North 24 Parganas district, is a Scheduled Caste-reserved Assembly constituency where the political contest has gradually shifted from Congress and the Left to a direct battle between the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, the Gaighata constituency had a total of 2,52,053 electors, with 2,13,243 valid votes cast. Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Subrata Thakur won the seat with 1,00,808 votes. Trinamool Congress candidate Narottam Biswas finished second with 91,230 votes, losing by a margin of 9,578 votes.
In 2016, the constituency had 2,24,311 electors and recorded 1,92,949 valid votes. Trinamool Congress candidate Pulin Bihari Ray won the election with 93,812 votes, while Communist Party of India candidate Kapil Krishna Thakur secured 64,240 votes and lost by 29,572 votes.
In the 2011 Assembly elections, Gaighata had 1,86,186 electors and 1,64,598 valid votes. Trinamool Congress candidate Manjul Krishna Thakur won with 91,487 votes, while Communist Party of India candidate Manoj Kanti Biswas came second with 66,040 votes, losing by 25,447 votes.
