Beleghata Assembly constituency is one of the 294 assembly constituencies in West Bengal. It is a general category seat established in 1977 and is situated in Kolkata Corporation district. The constituency is one of the seven assembly segments under No. 24 Kolkata Uttar Lok Sabha constituency and forms part of the Kolkata Uttar parliamentary constituency in Kolkata North district. In the 2021 Vidhan Sabha elections, Paresh Paul of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) won the seat with 1,03,182 votes, defeating Kashinath Biswas of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by a margin of 67,140 votes. In the 2016 assembly elections, Paresh Paul secured 84,843 votes, defeating Rajib Biswas of the CPI(M) by 26,179 votes. Paul was first elected from Beleghata in 2011 and was re-elected in 2016 and 2021, retaining the seat for the Trinamool Congress. The constituency came under scrutiny in 2022 when the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), probing cases related to post-poll violence after the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, questioned Paresh Paul in connection with the alleged lynching of BJP trade union leader Abhijit Sarkar in Narkeldanga’s Sitalatala area. The 30-year-old victim was allegedly assaulted and strangled in front of family members. The victim’s brother had alleged the MLA’s involvement in the incident. CBI officials questioned Paul for several hours and later summoned him again after examining witness statements and phone call records linked to the case. Paul stated that he would cooperate with the investigation and denied the allegations made against him, maintaining that the charges were politically motivated.
