Lawspet is one of the 30 assembly constituencies in Puducherry and has been a Congress stronghold in recent times, with the party winning four of the five elections since 2001. The current MLA, M Vaidianathan of the Congress, secured the seat in the 2021 assembly election by defeating BJP’s V Saminathan by 5,701 votes. That year, Lawspet had 31,253 registered electors, of whom 25,822 cast their votes. Vaidianathan’s victory marked a turnaround for him, as he had finished runner-up in 2016 when, contesting as an independent, he lost to Congress’ VP Sivakolundhu by 6,449 votes.
