Thattachavady is one of the 30 assembly constituencies in Puducherry and is currently represented by chief minister N Rangasamy. The seat has a long history with Rangasamy, the founder-president of the All India NR Congress, who has won Thattachavady five times—first in 1991, then in 1996, 2001, 2006, and again in 2021. In the 2021 assembly election, Rangasamy defeated CPI’s K Sethu Selvam by a margin of 5,456 votes. A by-election in 2019, necessitated by the disqualification of the 2016 winner Ashok Anand of the All India NR Congress over a disproportionate assets case, saw DMK's K Venkatesan emerge victorious, before Rangasamy wrested the seat in 2021. In 2021, Thattachavady had 29,760 registered electors, of whom 23,148 cast their votes.
