Karaikal North assembly constituency in Puducherry has been represented by PRN Thirumurugan since 2011. He first won the seat on a Congress ticket and later secured two consecutive victories for the All India NR Congress in 2016 and 2021. In the 2021 assembly polls, Thirumurugan narrowly defeated Congress candidate A.V Subramanian by just 135 votes, after having beaten AIADMK’s MV Omalingam by a margin of 3,298 votes in 2016. Omalingam had also finished runner-up in 2011, losing by 3,360 votes. Part of the Union territory’s sole Lok Sabha constituency, Puducherry, Karaikal North had 34,364 registered voters in 2021, of whom 28,042 cast their ballots.
