Indira Nagar is a stronghold of the ruling All India NR Congress, which has held the constituency since 2011, including a by-election win. The current legislator, AKD Arumugam, secured the seat in the 2021 assembly election with a margin of 18,531 votes against Congress’ M Kannan—the highest winning margin that year. Indira Nagar is part of Puducherry’s sole Lok Sabha constituency (also called Puducherry). The seat was previously won by N Rangasamy, the incumbent chief minister, in the 2011 assembly election, followed by AT Selvane in a by-election the same year, and again by Rangasamy in 2016. In 2021, Indira Nagar had 34,520 registered electors, of whom 28,643 cast their votes.
