Poonjar Assembly Election Results 2026
Poonjar Assembly constituency, numbered 101, lies in Kottayam district of Kerala and falls under the Pathanamthitta parliamentary constituency. Established in 2011 through the 2008 delimitation (splitting former Kanjirappally), it covers Poonjar and Meenachil taluks including Poonjar Thekkekara-Meghamala panchayats, Erattupetta fringes, and high-range areas, with around 180,000 electors. This general seat features rubber-cardamom plantations, diverse Christian-Muslim demographics, tribal pockets, small industries, and scenic hills near the Pamba River, blending agrarian livelihoods with emerging tourism and remittances-driven growth. Kerala Congress (Mani) [KC(M)], allied with LDF since 2016, holds strong with U. Prathibha as current MLA since 2016. In 2021, she won with 68,243 votes (45.47per cent), defeating UDF's A.J. Joseph by 10,836 votes (7.22per cent) at 73.89per cent turnout—building on her 2016 landslide (71,361 votes, 15,514 margin). KC(M)'s church-labor support trumps INC challenges and BJP's 15-18per cent rise among migrants. Key issues include rubber farmer distress from price volatility-wildlife raids, youth unemployment spurring migration, monsoon landslides on ghat roads, water scarcity despite reservoirs, poor rural healthcare-schools-transport, crop losses from erratic weather, and demands for irrigation upgrades, eco-tourism boosts, and minority welfare schemes. These socioeconomic tensions sustain LDF's grip in this competitive plantation belt.
