Peerumade Assembly constituency, numbered 92, is in Idukki district of Kerala under the Idukki parliamentary constituency. Established in 1965 and refined in the 2008 delimitation, it covers Peerumade taluk including Kumily town, panchayats like Kokkayar, Peermade, and Vagamon, with around 177,000 electors. This Scheduled Caste (SC)-reserved general seat features cardamom-tea plantations, spice tourism, hill resorts like Vagamon, and diverse communities including plantation workers, tribals, and Christian settlers amid misty highlands and Periyar Tiger Reserve fringes. CPI of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) holds firm with Vazhoor Soman as current MLA since 2021. He narrowly won with 60,141 votes (47.25per cent), defeating INC's Syriac Thomas (58,306 votes) by just 1,835 votes (1.44per cent) at 72.27per cent turnout—reversing INC's 2016 edge under E.S. Bijimol (42,862 votes, 314 margin). CPI has won 7 of 14 elections since 1977, leveraging labor support against UDF's church base and BJP's 5-9per cent migrant votes. Key issues include low plantation wages-housing, crop losses from droughts-monsoons, ghat landslides disrupting roads, youth migration, eco-tourism balance amid wildlife conflicts, water-electricity shortages near dams, poor remote healthcare-schools, and land rights for SC/tribals. These sustain razor-thin LDF-UDF duels in this scenic, labor-rich high-range pocket.
