Kottarakkara Assembly constituency is a general seat in Kollam district, Kerala, encompassing Kottarakkara town and rural panchayats like Kareepra and Veliyam, with rubber plantations, cashew processing and diverse demographics shaping its politics. The current MLA is K.N. Balagopal from CPI(M), elected in 2021 with 68,770 votes (45.98per cent), defeating INC's R. Resmi (57,956 votes, 38.75per cent) by 10,814 votes, while BJP's Vayakkal Soman got 21,223 votes (14.19per cent) amid 72.23per cent turnout. Key issues include flooding from Kallada River damaging crops; poor rural road connectivity hindering farm exports; youth unemployment despite Gulf remittances; erratic water supply and sanitation gaps; overburdened PHCs; illegal quarrying polluting rivers; monsoon power outages; rising land prices squeezing smallholders; traffic near markets; and inadequate public transport challenging this LDF stronghold's agrarian economy.
