Positioned in Kerala's Thrissur district along the Chalakudy River, the Chalakudy Assembly constituency ranks 72nd among the state's 140 legislative seats, forming the core of the Chalakudy Lok Sabha region. This general seat energizes over 190,000 voters from a diverse Hindu-Christian-Ezhava urban-rural mix, with turnouts around 72-74per cent, spanning Chalakudy town, Kodakara, and grama panchayats in central Kerala's industrial-agricultural belt. It highlights razor-thin UDF-LDF contests where INC recently reclaimed ground from CPI(M)'s long dominance. In the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections, INC's T.J. Saneesh Kumar Joseph clinched a thrilling victory with 61,888 votes (43.23per cent), edging KEC(M)'s Dennies K. Antony's 60,831 votes (42.49per cent) by just 1,057 votes amid 72.63per cent turnout. The 2016 race saw CPI(M)'s B.D. Devassy dominate with 74,251 votes (49.37per cent), defeating INC's T.U. Radhakrishnan by 26,648 votes, continuing LDF's stronghold after 2011 and 2006 wins.
