Kalamassery is a constituency located in Ernakulam district and is numbered 77 in the 140-member Kerala Assembly. The constituency was formed after the 2008 delimitation and first went to polls in its present form in 2011. It falls under the Ernakulam Lok Sabha constituency for parliamentary elections. Kalamassery is considered a stronghold of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M), which has retained the seat since 2011. The constituency includes key industrial and institutional hubs such as the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) area and major public sector units, making it politically significant. The current MLA is P Rajeeve (CPI-M), who won the 2021 Kerala Assembly election with 77,141 votes, defeating his nearest rival by a margin of 15,336 votes. He also serves as a minister in the Kerala government. Key issues in Kalamassery include industrial development, employment generation, urban infrastructure, waste management, traffic congestion, and environmental concerns linked to rapid urbanisation. Given its mix of residential, industrial and educational zones, development planning and public services remain central electoral themes.
