Kunnathur (SC) Assembly constituency is an SC-reserved seat in Kollam district, Kerala, encompassing panchayats like East Kallada, Munroe Island, Kunnathur, Mynagappally, Poruvazhy, Sasthamcotta, Sooranad North, Sooranad South, West Kallada, and Pavithreswaram, with canal networks, wetlands, and paddy fields shaping its agrarian politics. The current MLA is Kovoor Kunjumon (RSP-L, LDF), elected in 2021 with 69,436 votes (43.13per cent), narrowly defeating RSP's Ullas Kovoor (66,646 votes, 41.40per cent) by 2,790 votes, while BJP's Raji Prasad got 21,760 votes (13.52per cent) amid total valid votes of 160,062. Key issues include canal flooding damaging paddy cultivation; poor rural road connectivity hindering farm produce transport; youth unemployment despite Gulf remittances; erratic water supply and sanitation gaps; overburdened PHCs lacking advanced care; illegal sand mining polluting waterways; monsoon power outages; rising land prices squeezing small farmers; traffic near markets; and inadequate public transport challenging this LDF stronghold's rural economy.
