Palakkad: A 45-year-old man was killed in a wild elephant attack at Akamalavaram Unnathi tribal settlement near Malampuzha early on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Chandran, a resident of the settlement. The attack took place around 3am while Chandran and two others were sleeping under a tree outside their house due to the warm climate.
According to residents, a wild elephant that came out of the nearby forest attacked the group. Though the other two escaped, Chandran was trampled to death.
Residents said the settlement is located close to the forest area, but elephant attacks are uncommon in the locality. People in the colony usually did not take precautionary measures as such incidents were rare, they added.
