Inmate tries to kill self at Trichy prison

Trichy: A 26-year-old inmate lodged in Trichy central prison attempted to kill himself after prison officials seized 25g of ganja from him and transferred him to a different block inside the prison. Police identified the inmate as D Naveen Kumar, 26, from Veppanthattai in Perambalur district. He was arrested and remanded in a theft case in Thanjavur district in Jan. During an inspection, prison officials seized ganja from his possession. He was booked under the NDPS Act and the Prison Act by KK Nagar police. Subsequently, the prison officials shifted him to another block. Irked over the transfer, he quarrelled with prison staff and broke tiles in a bathroom. Police said he inflicted self-injuries on his hands, chest and stomach with the broken tile. Prison staff rescued him. He was treated as an outpatient at the prison hospital. Based on a complaint lodged by prison officer Rajesh Kannan, police registered a case and are investigating.
