Just at Cannes 2026, though it had seen every possible red carpet twist, Urvashi Rautela arrived in a dramatic fashion moment, and the internet wasted no time pulling out the fashion receipts from the past. Her third appearance at the festival quickly sparked online comparisons to Gigi Hadid’s stunning Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla saree from the NMACC 2023 launch. The eerie similarity between the two looks, based upon styling, silhouettes, and aesthetics, made the comment section turn rogue.

Urvashi Rautela wore an ivory saree with a stunning golden border, with an ornate and vibrant golden blouse with a pleated pallu, which looked iconic on her. She completed the look with a pair of golden studs and a white plastic flowerpot in her arm. Tying her hair from the back, she left a few strands to the front, which neatly framed her face. But what didn’t feel right was her entire look, which was not fresh from the book but looked like a toned-down version of Gigi Hadid’s NMACC ensemble from 2023.

Gigi Hadid wore a stunning Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla-designed saree, carved from Chikankari fabric, made in Lucknow, which looked absolutely iconic. She completed the look with a bejewelled elbow-length blouse with V-neckline detailing, heavy stacks of bangles, and a pair of golden studs.

Instagram fashion watchdog Diet Sabya made a post about the ‘gandi copy' and wrote, 'I say URVA, you say ... sheeeee err ... GIGI???' Only the First Lady of the universe/world/dubai/billion/1300 cr could have performed this level of fashion necromancy to bring back Gandi Copy (RIP). Unless there has been a case of mass amnesia and I was not invited, I don’t think anyone has forgotten Gigi’s Abu Jani chikankari couture sari!! You need mega GUTS to pull this off. I won’t live. Generating enough EMVs to power an entire influ-town!' Well, the comment section surely agreed with him.

While Urvashi leaned fully into glam theatrics with her larger-than-life energy, fashion watchdogs and meme pages instantly flooded the timelines, calling the look anything from ‘inspired’ to a ‘copy-paste’ moment. Well, Cannes fashion has never been subtle, but the reactions to this look quickly turned savage. However, one should acknowledge the labour behind the creation of her drape, but surely none can match the prowess of Gigi Hadid’s original piece.
