Kolkata: Rabindra Bharati University’s (RBU) vice-chancellor Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee resigned on Friday.
She sent her resignation letter to Lok Bhavan. However, she could not be reached for comment on her decision.
Sources close to her at the university said she cited “pressure” as the reason for stepping down. University officials, teachers, and staff were reportedly surprised as she had performed her duties until Thursday.
Chakravarti Banerjee was scheduled to attend a World Environment Day programme on Friday but did not appear, and no one on campus could contact her. Later in the afternoon, it became clear that she had submitted her resignation to the chancellor.
After receiving clearance from the Supreme Court, Chakravarti Banerjee was appointed in Aug last year. A section of the university had said that, after many challenges, the university finally had a permanent vice-chancellor.
Since Aug, the university had been running smoothly, but her resignation has brought back uncertainty.
