Kolkata: Several Kolkata Police personnel were allegedly assaulted on Thursday while attempting to stop an illegal construction in the East Kolkata Wetlands. The incident was reported from Abadpara under the Hatisala Police Station limits in Bhangar.
Police sources said a team of officers reached the area as part of an enforcement drive against unauthorised constructions in the ecologically sensitive wetland zone. As they tried to halt construction work, a group of local men and women allegedly surrounded the officers and attacked them.
Police claimed the personnel were kicked, punched and slapped, and some were beaten with sticks. One cop’s uniform was reportedly torn. The incident prompted additional police deployment.
An investigation into Thursday’s incident is underway.
