Kanpur: Celebrations turned into mourning when a nine-year-old boy died after being hit by a speeding truck during a wedding ceremony in the Muskara police station area of Hamirpur district on Thursday morning. The tragedy sparked angry protests from relatives and wedding guests, who placed the child’s body on the road, leading to a traffic blockade that lasted around 2.5 to 3 hours and disrupted key routes.
According to Vikram Rajput, a resident of Chandursi in Jalaun district, the wedding of his younger brother Deepak Rajput was being held at a palace on Rath Road in Muskara, where Deepak was to be married to the daughter of Ashok Rajput from Khadehi Lodhan village. Vikram said his brother-in-law Rajkumar, his sister, and their 9-year-old son Aniket had attended the ceremony.
After the Jaimala ceremony at night, Rajkumar and his family left the venue to return to Orai. Their vehicle was parked outside the guest house, and as they were getting in, a speeding truck coming from the Rath side ran over Aniket, who was standing nearby. He died on the spot.
Witnesses said enraged relatives and guests chased the truck and intercepted it near the Community Health Centre in Muskara. While the driver fled, the helper was caught and allegedly beaten by the crowd before being handed over to PRB 112 police personnel who arrived at the scene.
Following this, the family and guests placed the child’s body at a main intersection and demanded the arrest of the truck driver and owner. Aniket’s mother sat there holding her son’s body, while some women in the group created a disturbance and clashed with police.
Inspector-in-charge Yogendra Pratap Singh were unable to immediately clear the blockade. Later, Rath circle officer Rajeev Pratap Singh arrived and pacified the family through talks.
Singh said the driver had been taken into custody and the truck seized.
