Kanpur: A man has been arrested for allegedly strangling a tailor with a gamcha after he refused to share laddoos in UP’s Kannauj district. The accused was later tracked down and apprehended while hiding in an orchard on the outskirts of the city.
Nizamuddin, 45, a tailor residing in Kanshiram Colony near the old police lines in Mohalla Tajpur Naukasat, had purchased a plot on Tuesday. On Wednesday evening, he went to his friend’s house in Mohalla Shekhana with sweets, but he was out.
According to police, as Nizamuddin reached his bicycle, the accused, Wasiq Mulla, asked for sweets. After Nizamuddin refused, Wasiq allegedly assaulted him with slippers. Residents who attempted to intervene were pushed aside, police said. The accused then reportedly wrapped a gamcha around Nizamuddin’s neck, dragged him along the road, and strangled him to death.
SP Vinod Kumar said the investigation found the accused had a history of mental instability. A murder FIR has been registered.
Inspector-in-charge Jitendra Pratap Singh said no prior enmity or motive has surfaced.
