Pilibhit: A 28-year-old tractor driver was killed after being run over by his own vehicle while washing it in a river stream in Pilibhit district on Sunday. The vehicle continued moving unattended after the accident.
Rajesh Kumar, a resident of Mudia Bilhara village under Bilsanda police station limits, worked at a brick kiln in Dilabarpur village. Police said he had taken the tractor to the Katna River near Kamghat bridge to clean it when the vehicle’s rear wheel got stuck in the sand, causing it to tilt sharply.
Kumar lost balance and fell from the tractor, which was still in gear with the ignition on. The vehicle then ran over him and continued moving, driverless, through the shallow stream.
Locals recorded videos of the unmanned tractor, which were later widely circulated on social media. Police, along with villagers, recovered Kumar’s body and used an earth-moving machine to pull the tractor out of the river. Doctors at a nearby govt hospital declared him dead on arrival.
Deuria Kotwali police station SHO
Gautam Singh said, “He had gone to his brother-in-law’s house on Saturday using the tractor owned by the brick kiln. The incident took place while he was returning to work.”
The body was sent for autopsy. “No written complaint has been received in connection with the incident so far,” SHO Singh said.
