The West Bengal cabinet led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has decided to discontinue government assistance to groups based on religious categorisation, effectively ending religion-based schemes that operated during the previous All India Trinamool Congress government led by Mamata Banerjee. The government also scrapped the existing state OBC list in line with the Calcutta High Court judgment and announced plans to set up a panel to determine future quota eligibility. Minister Agnimitra Paul said schemes run under religious categorisation by the Information and Cultural Affairs Department and the Minority Affairs and Madrasa Education Department would continue until the end of this month and be discontinued from June. The move follows developments linked to the state OBC list dispute.
