BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s personal assistant, Chandra, was shot dead in Madhyamgram area of North 24 Parganas district in West Bengal late at night.According to eyewitnesses, a bike-borne assailant intercepted the vehicle and opened fire at point-blank range before fleeing the scene. The attack reportedly took place between 10:30 PM and 11 PM, just a few hundred metres away from a hospital. The driver of the car was also injured in the firing.Reacting to the incident, Suvendu Adhikari termed the killing a “pre-planned murder” and alleged that recce of the area had been conducted for days before the attack. He also blamed the law and order situation in West Bengal, calling it the result of “15 years of Maha-Jungle Raj.”Police have launched an investigation and are examining evidence related to the targeted attack.

Russia on Saturday hit out at German chancellor Friedrich Merz over his calls to make Germany the strongest army in Europe. Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov accused Western leaders, especially Merz, of pursuing the same goal that Adolf Hitler failed to achieve: the “strategic defeat” of Russia. Lavrov specifically targeted Merz’s calls to strengthen Germany’s armed forces, saying the idea of Berlin building the “strongest army in Europe” carried alarming historical implications.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has called for the formation of a united opposition platform in West Bengal to take on the BJP after the party’s massive victory in the Assembly elections. An Indian sailor was killed and four others suffered burn injuries after a wooden dhow carrying 18 Indian crew members caught fire near the Strait of Hormuz. The incident occurred on Friday when the vessel, carrying general cargo, caught fire and later capsized near the strategic maritime route linking the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. According to sources, 17 Indian crew members were rescued by a passing vessel. Officials said the injured sailors are undergoing treatment in Dubai and are currently safe. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz region between Iran and the United States. Officials from the Indian Consulate in Dubai met the rescued crew members and are coordinating assistance with the dhow owner.
