Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has called for the formation of a united opposition platform in West Bengal to take on the BJP after the party’s massive victory in the Assembly elections. Addressing a gathering outside her Kalighat residence on Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary, Banerjee appealed to all opposition parties, including Left and ultra-Left groups, to come together against the BJP. She also urged student unions and NGOs opposed to the BJP to join the effort. Mamata said national parties should also become part of the proposed “joint platform” and added that she was open to discussions with any political party willing to unite on the issue. Her remarks came on the same day BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari took oath as West Bengal’s first BJP Chief Minister.
