The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections marked a major political shift in the state, with TVK winning 108 of the 234 seats in its electoral debut. The results also marked the first time that both major Dravidian parties were voted out of power simultaneously.Although TVK fell short of the majority mark on its own, the party secured support from the Congress, CPI(M), CPI, VCK and IUML, all of which were previously part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance.Vijay, popularly known as ‘Thalapathy’, drew large crowds during the campaign, with several observers comparing his political rise to that of former Chief Minister M G Ramachandran.Tamil Nadu has a long history of actors entering politics, and Vijay’s emergence has often been viewed as the next major chapter after Vijayakanth.
