DMK's Lakshmanan R emerges victorious, securing 72982 votes against TVK's Mohanraj N, by a margin of 4119 votes.
The Villuppuram constituency witnessed a high-stakes electoral battle in the 2026 Assembly elections. The DMK re-nominated incumbent Lakshmanan R, seeking to capitalise on his past victory and local connections. He was challenged by Vijayasureshbabu of the
AIADMK, who campaigned to restore the party’s historical dominance in the district headquarters. The entry of Mohanraj N of the TVK and Abinaya Ponnivalavan of the NTK introduced a competitive youth-centric dynamic, focusing on urban infrastructure and industrial growth.
In the 2021 election, Lakshmanan R (DMK) secured victory with 102,271 votes (50.16% vote share), defeating C Ve Shanmugam (AIADMK) by a margin of 14,868 votes. In the 2016 election, C Ve Shanmugam (AIADMK) had won the seat with 69,421 votes (36.74% vote share), defeating S M Ameer Abbas (IUML) by 22,291 votes.
Voter turnout reached 86.66%, a significant increase from the 77.8% recorded in 2021. This surge is largely attributed to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) drive, which cleansed the electoral rolls and mobilised a record number of first-time voters and urban professionals.
Villuppuram (Assembly constituency No. 74) is a crucial general segment and the administrative capital of the district. As a major educational and commercial hub, it serves as a vital barometer for middle-class and youth sentiment in northern Tamil Nadu.
The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections were held in a single phase on April 23, recording a high voter turnout of 85.15%, with results declared on May 4.
