In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election for Shyampukur (166), Purnima Chakraborty of the Bharatiya Janata Party secured victory with 60,248 votes, defeating All India Trinamool Congress candidate Shashi Panja, who polled 45,615 votes. The BJP won by a margin of 14,633 votes in the constituency. Forward Bloc’s Jhuma Das finished third with 7,356 votes, while Congress and other independents remained far behind. NOTA recorded 942 votes.
Shyampukur, constituency number 166, is a wholly urban seat in Kolkata's north, part of the Kolkata Uttar Lok Sabha constituency. In 2026, sitting TMC MLA Dr Shashi Panja seeks a fourth consecutive term, facing BJP's Poornima Chakraborty.
In 2021, Shashi Panja retained the seat convincingly, defeating BJP's Sandipan Biswas by approximately 22,520 votes, with the TMC polling close to 55 per cent. In 2016, Panja had won with around 47 per cent of votes, defeating the All India Forward Bloc's Piyali Pal by approximately 13,155 votes — a tighter result reflecting the Forward Bloc's residual strength at the time. Panja first won the seat in 2011, signalling the TMC's decisive capture of a constituency historically dominated by the Forward Bloc, which had won it ten times since independence.
Shyampukur comprises 11 wards of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and features a densely packed urban electorate. Panja is a doctor-turned-politician who holds portfolios for Women and Child Development and Social Welfare in the state cabinet, giving her considerable governmental visibility. The constituency's historical significance and the 2024 Lok Sabha result — where the BJP narrowly outpolled the TMC here — means that 2026 could be more competitive than Panja's previous victories might suggest.
