Thiruvallur Assembly constituency, designated as Constituency No. 4 and home to the district headquarters, holds a distinct position due to its administrative role alongside a mix of agrarian settlements and expanding peri-urban areas. Situated beyond the north-western outskirts of Chennai, it serves as a key governance and service centre for surrounding rural and semi-urban pockets. The constituency also houses the Divya Desam Sri Vijayaraghava Perumal Temple, an important Vaishnavite place of worship that contributes to the region’s cultural life. Unlike largely rural constituencies, Thiruvallur’s political priorities are shaped by the efficiency of administration, dependable irrigation systems, availability of jobs, and the pressures of steady urban expansion. Residents face challenges such as unreliable irrigation water, poor condition of roads in interior villages, drinking water scarcity during summer months, inadequate drainage infrastructure in town areas, limited access to government healthcare services, and migration of youth in search of employment. In the 2021 Assembly elections, DMK candidate V. G. Raajendran won the Thiruvallur seat with 1,07,709 votes, defeating AIADMK’s B. V. Ramanaa, who secured 85,008 votes, by a margin of 22,701 votes. Earlier, in the 2016 polls, the constituency had 2,57,558 electors and 2,06,244 valid votes polled, with V. G. Raajendran of DMK winning 80,473 votes against AIADMK’s Baskaran A, who secured 75,335 votes, a margin of 5,138 votes.
