Poonamallee, a reserved Assembly Constituency numbered 6, lies along the western fringe of Chennai and has emerged as a rapidly expanding seat influenced by major highways, defence installations, large‑scale residential development, and the merging of peri‑urban villages into the urban fold. Once known primarily as a historic temple town and a military centre, Poonamallee today functions as an important western entry point, connecting Chennai to Bengaluru and the interior regions of Tamil Nadu. Unlike inner‑city constituencies, political discourse in Poonamallee centres on handling swift urbanisation—striking a balance between development and the need for robust infrastructure, efficient transport systems, assured water supply, and effective public services. Chronic traffic bottlenecks at the Poonamallee junction, flooding during monsoon due to inadequate drainage systems, shortage of drinking water leading to heavy reliance on tanker supply, deteriorated condition of interior and local roads, gaps in solid waste collection and disposal, and safety risks for pedestrians along highway stretches remain key concerns for residents. In the 2021 Assembly elections, DMK’s A. Krishnaswamy won the Poonamallee seat with 149,578 votes, defeating PMK’s S. X. Rajamannar, who secured 55,468 votes, by a margin of 94,110 votes. Earlier, in the 2016 polls, the constituency saw AIADMK’s T. A. Elumalai win with 103,952 votes, defeating DMK’s Paranthamen I, who secured 92,189 votes, by a margin of 11,763 votes.
