Crowd protests grandfather’s attempt to rape 9-yr-old girl

Pune: Several city residents on Tuesday night protested outside the Parvati and Swargate police stations against an incident at 6pm wherein a 50-year-old man allegedly tried to rape his granddaughter (9) in a hutment.The sexual assault was foiled by alert local residents, who beat up the suspect and called the police. Officers of the Parvati and Swargate police stations reached the spot and detained the man. However, the local residents had gathered in large numbers and wanted the suspect to be handed over to them.A large number of angry people gathered and sat in front of the two aforementioned police stations blocking vehicular flow. Heavy bandobust was deployed in the two areas, as police personnel tried to pacify the protesters.Late in the night, the Parvati police detained the grandfather and began recording statements of the women who saw the assault attempt. The crowd was still blocking the roads in the area till after midnight.
