Man, 53, spends ‘2 days’ in well, rescued
Karur: A 53-year-old man was on Monday rescued by fire and rescue personnel from a well into which he claimed to have fallen two days ago in Karur district. The incident occurred at a coconut grove in Nallampalayam village near Kattur belonging to Palanisamy. Gopi, a worker at the grove, heard cries for help coming from a well on the premises. When he peeked inside, he spotted a man struggling in the water holding onto a water-pumping pipe. He immediately alerted the Karur fire and rescue services station.A 10-member team from the station led by assistant district officer Thirumurugan rushed to the spot in two fire tenders. Using ropes and safety nets, the team successfully rescued the man alive from the well. The man was identified as N Sugavanam, 53, a resident of Vangal. During preliminary inquiry, he told officials he had accidentally fallen into the well around 11 30am on Saturday.Asked how he managed to survive inside the well for nearly two days, Sugavanam said he himself did not know. He was taken to the Vangal govt hospital for treatment and handed over to his relatives. Fire and rescue services personnel said the man knew how to swim but could not find a way to climb out. "The well is fenced, and it is not clear why he had gone inside," an official said.
