Maha orders govt offices to not use old IT dept title
Nagpur: Nearly three weeks after Maharashtra officially renamed its Information Technology dept as "Electronics, Information Technology (IT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Department," many govt offices are still using the deparment's old name in official files, proposals and official correspondence. The lapse has prompted the state to issue a fresh reminder circular, directing all administrative offices, subordinate depts and authorities to compulsorily use the revised name in every form of official communication, including e-Office entries, notes, references and proposals.According to a government resolution issued on May 11, the renaming follows an April 21, 2026 notification through which the new dept was formally established, with the earlier IT dept structure brought under its expanded framework.Officials said inconsistent use of the dept's name could create technical complications and discrepancies in administrative records. The revised nomenclature reflects Maharashtra's effort to integrate Artificial Intelligence into governance and digital administration. By adding "Artificial Intelligence" to the department's identity, the state has signalled its intention to align future governance systems with emerging technologies and AI-driven policy frameworks.
