NSS slams ‘intervention’ of IUML in Kerala CM selection
Kottayam: NSS general secretary G Sukumaran Nair came out against the reported intervention of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) in the selection of Congress chief minister, stating it is undemocratic and unnecessary. Nair aired his view immediately after Congress veteran Jairam Ramesh told reporters in New Delhi that the CM will be announced only on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters at NSS headquarters in Perunna near here on Wednesday, Nair asked why the constituent parties of UDF intervened in CM selection unnecessarily. "It is their intervention that is posing as a block in Congress party deciding its CM," he said, adding that the parties he was talking about include IUML. He also asked how the selection of Congress CM matters to those parties.
He also said selection of chief minister is an internal matter of Congress. "Constituent parties should welcome whoever becomes the CM. That is decency and democratic way," he said.
He also said Congress high command was put under pressure by these parties and this forced them to seek the opinion of constituent parties. "I don't think high command yielded to the pressure of these parties. Or else the announcement would not have been extended like this," he said. He also said that those who want to control things are behind this.
"If an election is held now, UDF would lose 30 seats. Even if there is a byelection, this sentiment will persist. The advantage of having 102 seats has been squandered," he said. Nair questioned whether there is any governance in the state now.
