Koppal: BJP leaders in the district on Sunday demanded that the state govt provide compensation of Rs 5 lakh per acre to farmers whose horticulture and agricultural crops were damaged due to rain. The leaders visited the damaged fields in Hosahalli, Muddaballi and Hatti villages in the taluk and inspected the damaged crops.
Speaking on the occasion, former BJP state executive committee member Basavaraj Kyavatar said farmers suffered losses after crops cultivated with huge investment were damaged by unseasonal rain. He said the govt was planning to provide compensation of Rs 22,500 per acre, but alleged that the amount was inadequate.
“Many farmers have taken farmland on lease by paying nearly Rs 1.5 lakh annually and spent up to Rs 2 lakh on cultivation. The compensation proposed by the govt is not sufficient. The govt should immediately increase it to Rs 5 lakh per acre,” he demanded.
MLC Hemalatha Nayak said horticulture crops are completely damaged due to unseasonal rain and urged the govt to immediately provide higher compensation to the affected farmers.
