Maxx Crosby never blends into the background, and that truth surfaced again as the Las Vegas Raiders closed a difficult season. The star edge rusher walked away from the team facility after learning he would be held out of the final two games, a move that quickly drew league wide attention. For a player who prides himself on availability and toughness, being sidelined hit deeper than any sack total or stat line.
The timing makes the moment sharper. Las Vegas sits at 2-13, staring at the reality of a lost season while also holding a clear path toward the No. 1 overall pick. That tension between future planning and present pride has defined the Raiders’ final weeks. Crosby, playing through pain since October, wanted to be on the field. The organization wanted to protect both his knee and its draft position. Something had to give.
Maxx Crosby and the clash between competition and caution
Head coach Pete Carroll did not dodge the situation. He addressed it openly after the news broke, capturing both Crosby’s frustration and his own respect for it.
“He said, 'I'd like to get out here,' so I said, 'Get out of here,' and he took off,” Carroll said, via video from Vegas Sports Today, later adding, “It was exactly like you would think he would do, and he should do, and I agree with him a 1000 percent on how he responded.”
The Raiders pointed to Crosby’s knee injury as the reason for sitting him against the Giants and possibly the Chiefs. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that concern has lingered for months. Still, the numbers tell a story of defiance. Crosby played all 15 games, logging 10 sacks, 73 tackles, and 20 quarterback hits. He alone accounts for more than a third of the team’s sack production, a staggering impact that shows how thin the defense becomes without him.
Carroll later reinforced that the decision was not sudden.
“He knows that he’s banged up, so he’s talking about, ‘I’d like to get out of here.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, get out of here.’ So, he took off,” Carroll told reporters, via McFadden.
“This didn’t just spring on him. We’ve been talking about it, and it was exactly what you would think he would do, and he should do. I agree with him 1,000 percent on how he responded, and I [would have] responded the same way.”
For Las Vegas, the logic is cold but clear. Losing improves draft odds, especially with the Giants in the same 2-13 position. For Crosby, the equation is simpler. He plays. Whether he suits up again this season remains uncertain, but his reaction revealed something no standings table can measure. Even in a lost year, Maxx Crosby refuses to coast.
